Because I specialize in Americana, with a particular interest in colorfully decorated Pennsylvania German chairs and settees, I have always had a particular fondness for the Germanic and Scandinavian paint-decorated furniture of Europe that influenced Pennsylvania German colors and design. That is one reason that I fell in love with this Norwegian corner chair that has a salmon-painted background and highly embellished decoration of fruit and greenery that is very reminiscent of Pennsylvania decorated chairs made in the same period (1840-70). The differences are that there is simply a lot more decoration than you will typically see on Pennsylvania seating, and that the form of this beautiful corner chair, with its bentwood crest rail, is distinctly European. I have seen this quality of paint and decoration previously on chairs and cupboards, mostly in text on the study of the furniture of this region, but I have rarely seen this good of an example in person. The color, decoration, and surface are impeccable. Note in particular the quality of the surviving paint on the seat, which consists of a large and striking rose medallion in the center and has an overall appearance that is similar to the Gaudy Dutch porcelain so-loved by Pennsylvania collectors. The chair is decorated all-the-way-around. No surface was spared except the underside and the balance is very pleasing to the eye. |
