   M-11471 - Americas in the 1600's

Description:

M-11471: (Image: 14 3/4 x 19 1/2'') ''AMERICA noviter delineata'' Henri Hondius. Amsterdam: Jan Jansson, c. 1647. Engraved map with original hand-coloring. Verso: Latin. (Ref: Burden #192; Tooley p. 299; Moreland & Bannister p. 257 illustrated; Goss #27 illustrated; Portinaro & Knirsch #LXXVI - illustrated).

This map depicts the Americas, and includes insets of Greenland and Antarctica. California is shown in peninsular form, but hopes are still evident for a Northwest Passage, and Martin Frobisher's illusory strait across southern Greenland. Also preserved is the continued belief in a mythical southern continent.  The map is highly decorative, with numerous ships and sea monsters, plus scenes of natives in South America.
