SET OF 6 PAINT-DECORATED, BIRD CAGE, ARROW-BACK, HALF-SPINDLE-BACK WINDSOR CHAIRS, AN UNKNOWN FORM, CA 1800-1815:

Description:
A beautiful marriage of folk art and fine Windsor chair-making can be found in this set of six that are unlike any that I have ever encountered. While certain design elements speak of Pennsylvania, such as the half-spindle back of the lower register, more characteristics point to New England, most likely Maine. These include the birdcage crest, the leaf and flower decoration, and the fine turnings throughout. The arrow shape of the center register of spindles gives each chairs a lot of punch, especially when added to the generous thumb-back lean of the uprights and the unusually wide splay from seat to crest rail. Remarkable condition. A wonderful acquisition for the folk art collector or connoisseur of rare Windsor forms. Circa 1800-1815.
