An interesting, country Sheraton form blanket chest, made ca 1830-40, serves as the canvas for an extraordinary feat of folk painting. The artwork.was accomplished by painting a thin layer of burnt umber over a brilliant, orange background, then wiping the brown paint off with sponge or a cloth before it dried. The result is a whimsical extension of what might otherwise be called faux graining if this were an academic hand. But the style is not academic; instead it demonstrates Pennsylvania or Ohio Germanic folk art at its very best. The arching arms of the work on the panels are accented by squiggled and straight, opposing lines of roughly equal width. When viewed from an angle, especially, the statement is as bold as any you will see on a piece of mid-19th century, American, paint-decorated furniture. Western Pennsylvania or Ohio origin.
Construction: Pinned and mortised throughout. Single plank walnut lid, walnut styles surround deeply chamfered pine panels on the front and sides and a recessed poplar panel on the reverse, block and turned maple legs, poplar glove box on the interior. |
