34 STARS, 1861-63, CIVIL WAR PERIOD, GLOBAL ROWS DESIGN

Description:
34 star American parade flag, printed on coarse cotton. Note the interesting offset-row configuration that results in what I refer to as global rows, because the star pattern forms an oval that resembles a global map. This is a result of the particular positioning of the rows, which creates a narrow, vertical oval of stars in the center, surrounded by two parentheses, the overall look of which resembles longitudinal lines. Also note how the stars of the flag are upside-down, which adds further visual peculiarity. In this case, the upside-down vertical positioning is a result of a mistake in the manufacturing. This is a very scarce little flag that I have seldom seen. Kansas was admitted into the Union as the 34th state on January 29th, 1861, about 2 months before the Confederate assault on Fort Sumter that marked the beginning of the Civil War. The 34th star was officially added on July 4th of that year, but most flag makers would have added a 34th star with the addition of Kansas in January. The star count remained official until July 4th, 1863, and 34 star flags would have been produced until the addition of West Virginia in June of that year. Mounting: The solid oak frame has great a press-decorated channel and early surface and dates toi the period between 1880 and 1900. The flag has been stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
