ETHAN ALLEN: A FULL-BODIED, MOLDED COPPER, RUNNING HORSE WEATHERVANE, CA 1880-1910:

Description:
Made ca 1880-1910, this full-bodied, copper, running horse weathervane is made in a profile called Ethan Allen. The gilded surface is not original, but it is both old and beautiful, while the crusty surface in and around the cast zinc head is a great, untouched, desirable patina. A wonderful example for the beginner, the vane comes with a professionally, made, custom flat surface mount. The silhouettes for many horse weathervanes were essentially copied from engraved prints of famous race horses, done by popular lithographers of the day, such as Currier & Ives. Each horse had its own running style (nose up, head flat forward, head perpendicular to the ground, etc.), which prompted their specific features. That is the case with Ethan Allen, a son of the equally famous Blackhawk, from which another popular weathervane form was made. Several horses look very much like Ethan Allen, such as Mountain Boy, Goldsmith Maid, and Prancing Dixie, and it can be effectively argued that any one is actually the other. There were so many weathervane manufacturers and so many subtle variations that students of the various forms must make reasonable guesses.
