Description:

M-11298: (Image: 16 x 20 ¾ ’’) “A NEWE MAPE OF GERMANY...”  London: John Speed,  c. 1676 from the Atlas "A PROSPECT OF THE MOST FAMOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD" Exceptionally fine engraved map with later hand-coloring. Engraved by Abraham Goos. Verso text: English.

This highly decorative map depicts the German Empire in the 1670’s. Topographical features shown and most major towns, cities, mountain ranges and waterways are named.  A fine Cartes à Figures Map: Across the top of are panoramas of four major German cities: “Heidelberg, Francfurt, Wien, Prag, Coln, Nurnberg, Strasburg & Augsburg”;  the panels at each side illustrate the social hierarchy of German society with full-length portraits of a “Nobleman, Marchant, Bohemian, Helventian and Cont man” with their respective female partners.
