M-11329: (Image: 19 5/8 x 22 ¾’’) “RECENS EDITA totius NOVI BELGII, in AMERICA SEPTENTRIONALI...” Augsburg: Matthias Seutter, c. [1730] - 1740. Important engraved map with full original hand-coloring. State 3 (Reference: Tooley: Chapter 8, #26; McCorkle #730.5).
This classic historical map depicts the Northeast coast and especially the Hudson Valley, in rich detail. It incorporates the distinctive course of the Delaware River, showing it separate from the Hudson. Seutter's map is the first to show, by means of printed lines, the boundaries of Massachusetts, New England, New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. The cartouche depicts natives and gods presenting tribute to a seated English monarch (probably George II).
Included at the bottom is the very famous perspective view of "NEU JORCK" with keyed references. This is the third state of the map, distinguishable by the 2 lines of text below the words “August. Vind” in the title cartouche. |
