M-11370: (Image: 14 ¾ x 20’’) “EVROPA…”Amsterdam: Henricus Hondius, c. 1631. Verso: German. Beautifully engraved map with later hand-coloring.
This highly decorative map of Europe is beautifully engraved and detailed. Topographical features are shown, including erupting volcanoes in Iceland and Sicily. Countries are identified and most major towns, cities, mountain ranges, and waterways are located. African cats frolic along the northern edge of the continent and Russian bears are found near the Arctic Circle. Numerous vessels adorn the seas while a large sea monster approaches the coast of Greenland. Two decorative title cartouches add to the aesthetics. A highly informative and beautifully decorative view of Europe in the early 1600’s! |
