SUBSTANTIAL FOLDING CHECKERBOARD WITH LARGE SCALE SPACES, GREAT SURFACE, AND COACH-PAINTED BACK AND MOLDING, CA 1850-1870:
Description: |
Thick, heavy and large scale folding checker and chess board with unusually large squares. The front of the board is painted in black and white with gilt-painted trim and has excellent patina. This is a craftsman-made example, as evidenced by the decorative carriage painting in scarlet red and gold gilt on the reverse, and the gilded, decorative trim around the molded edge, where the initials CHC can be found, either as the signature of the maker or the initials of the owner. This uncommonly hefty example is also notably early, dating somewhere in the 1850-1870 period. |
