M-11683: (Image: 18 1/2 x 23 1/2'') “CARTE D'AMÉRIQUE...” Guillaume De l'Isle. Paris: Dezauche, c. 1800. Fine engraved map with later hand-coloring.
This famous historical map was first issued by De l’Isle’s in 1722. Dezauche, the firms successor, published this version in 1800. De l'’Isle’s maps “influenced delineation of the Mississippi Valley for many years” (Schwartz & Ehrenberg The Mapping of America, p. 143). It was “a towering landmark along the path of Western cartographic development...He correctly depicted the Great Lakes region, as well as the many English settlements along the East Coast.” (Martin & Martin, Maps of Texas and the Southwest, p.93).
This updated edition includes the information from Cook's discoveries in the Northwest and Alaska in an inset upper left "Supplement a la Parite Nord Ouest de l'Amerique...". The New United States is shown extending to the Mississippi and southward to Florida. Also of note: the Privilege is changed from "du Roi" to "l'Auteur Rue des Noyers Garantie Nationale An. 9." Due to the French Revolution the Royal arms were erased from the cartouche and replaced by ribbons, the king's name was removed from the title, and the date (An 9) refers to the French Republican calendar for 1800. |
