   M-11686 - Celestial, Terrestrial & Armillary Spheres - c. 1720

Description:

M-11686: (Image:  19 x 22 3/4'') “SPHAERARVM ARTIFICIALIVM TYPICA REPRAE-SENTATIO novissime adumbrata” Nuremberg: : Johann Baptist Homann, c. 1720. Engraved chart with original hand-coloring.

This rare chart is an 18th century study of a pair of terrestrial and celestial globes and a Ptolemaic armillary sphere, en suite, all on Baroque stands.  The complex armillary sphere (center) depicts the earth as a green globe in the center displaying the various rings for the Tropics, Equator, Arctic and Antarctic within the solstice and equinox rings - all of which are contained within the ecliptic circle - and then within the meridian circle, which circles inside the circle of the horizon. The terrestrial globe (right) highlights Asia, Europe and a portion of Africa; the celestial globe (left) contains the allegorical constellations based on Greek Mythology.
