Two illuminated two-line initials in burnished gold on a pink and blue ground with delicate white penwork; fourteen illuminated one-line initials and line extenders in burnished gold on a pink and blue ground with delicate white penwork; exceptional border with an intricate floral motif in colors of blue, red, green, and burnished gold!! France (probably Paris), c. 1440.
The illuminated one-line "E" begins Psalm 5: 12-13: "Et letentur..." (But let all them be glad that hope in thee: they shall rejoice forever, and thou shalt dwell in them. And all they that love thy name shall glory in thee: For thou wilt bless the just. O Lord, thou hast crowned us, as with a shield of thy good will). The two-line illuminated "L" begins Psalm 116 (King James 117) complete: "Laudate..." (O Praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his mercy is confirmed upon us: and the truth of the Lord remaineth forever". The two-line illuminated "P" begins the prayer: "Per te dei..." (Through thee, O Mother of God, has the life we had lost been given back to us: for, from heaven receiving Him who became Thy Son, thou on the world hast bestowed its Savior). |
