Description:

M-12071: (Image: 19 ¼ x 22 ¾’’’) “HEMISPHÆRIUM COELI BOREALE...”  J. Gabariel Dopplemayr.  Nuremberg: Johann Baptist Homann, c. 1742. Engraved map with original hand-coloring.

This beautiful chart maps the Northern Constellations.  The Ptolemaic constellations are shown as well as signs of the zodiac and eight new constellations by Hevelius.  The stars are laid out according to the ecliptic for the end of the year 1730. Depicted in the corners are the observatories of Brahe (on the island of Hven), Polish astronomer Hevelius (in Danzig), and astronomer Eimmart  (in Nuremberg) and Paris . The tables along the sides identify and describe the constellations on the chart.

Johann Gabriel Doppelmayer  (1677-1750)was an astronomer and mathematician of high repute (professor of mathematics in Nuremberg).
