   IM-10156 - Medieval Gregorian Chant with exceptional illuminated initial


 

Description:

IM-10156: (500 x 380mm 19 5/8 x 14 7/8'') Original manuscript leaf from a manuscript Choirbook. This beautiful four-line stave musical sheet is on animal parchment, written in liturgical gothic script. Six lines of music and text.  

One exceptional illuminated initial ''L'' in red with the base of the initial a dolphin (symbol of resurrection and salvation)! The interior is a floral design in  green, red, blue and sepia on a deep blue ground; the initial is surrounded by burnished gold and continues into the margin.

Italy (Bologna), c. 1480.

This leaf begins the Feast of Saint Lawrence (patron saint of cooks and the poor).   The illuminated "L" begins:  "Levita Laurentis..." (The Levite Lawrence, who made the blind see by the sign of the Cross, worked a good work ...).
