   IM-1515 - Medieval Manuscript Miniature of the Annunciation, c. 1400-20


 

Description:

IM-1515: (98 x 70mm) Original miniature (cut to shape) from a medieval manuscript on animal vellum. This remarkable miniature painting depicts The Annunciation. Mary is shown kneeling with a book. The Archangel Gabriel has appeared, with blue wings. Gold letters are seen coming from the Gabriel's mouth ''Ave Maria''. In the distance is an open window with golden rays emanating from heaven, signifying the presence of the Holy Spirit. Northern France (Paris) 1400-1420.

Ex-collection Burkhardt-Wildt.

A related miniature of similar shape and dimensions from the Burkhart-Wildt Album is attributed to the Lucon Master by Christopher de Hamel. (pictured in the Metropolitan Museum ''Mirror of the Medieval World'' #206).
