One illuminated two-line initial in pink on a blue ground with an interior having a blue lion on a liquid gold ground; one illuminated two-line initial in pink on a blue ground with an interior floral motif in green and red. Panel border in a floral motif in blue, white, green and yellow with two owls (attribute of Christ, who sacrificed Himself to save mankind) on a deep red ground. France (Bourges), c. 1470-80.
Miniature painting (73 x 50mm) of The Pentecost: The Virgin Mary is seated in the center of a tiled floor surrounded by Apostles and Disciples. The Holy Spirit in the form of a white dove is at the top center with red flames descended on all gathered. Three arched windows at back. The elaborate border surrounding the miniature shows a diverse floral motif (with strawberries - symbol of perfect righteousness) and six birds (including an owl, and a goldfinch) on a liquid gold ground.
The two-line “C” begins the prayer: "Concede..." (Grant, we beseech Thee, O Lord God, unto us Thy servants, that we may rejoice in continual health of mind and body; and, by the glorious intercession of Blessed Mary ever Virgin, may be delivered from present sadness, and enter into the joy of Thine eternal gladness. Through Christ our Lord...). The two-line illuminated "V" begins: "Veni..." (Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful...). |
