PA-3015: (6 11/16 x 3 7/8 inches - 171 x 98 mm) Ancient Roman terracotta wine jug (amphora) – wheel turned with applied handles and decorated with concentric rings on the body. Nicely shaped and in excellent condition with no cracks. The jug is footed and has a flared rim. The surface shows some encrustation from burial. A superior example of Roman provincial manufactured utility ware. For jugs with similar decoration see Hayes "Roman Pottery in the Royal Ontario Museum," Plates 108-110. Provenance: from a Massachusetts Private Collection. |
