IM-10594: (325 x 240mm - 12 3/4 x 9 3/8''�) Original leaf from a medieval Choirbook. This musical leaf was executed by hand in manuscript calligraphy on animal parchment. The music and text (nine lines written in rounded gothic script) were written in black ink on a four-line stave, with headings and rubrics in red. Austria or Bavaria (the pink and green are distinctive to this region), c. 1425-50.
The illuminated ''D'' (75mm square - 3 '' square) is painted in pink and magenta with an interior painting of the Holy Spirit represented as a white dove in clouds with golden halo and flames of gold descending from the tips of the wings; beneath the wings are twenty-one silver tongues and one golden tongue; the initial rests on a burnished gold ground and extends into the margin with a floral motif in pink, magenta, blue, green and burnished gold!
The text begins a hymn for Pentecost: ''Dum complerentur...'' (When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place, saying: alleluia. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, alleluia, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting, alleluia...) |
