Villefranche sur Mer
Dated: 1956, Oil on canvas, 21 x 31 in
Born in Arles, in the South of France, Marguerite Bermond studied first at the Ecole des Beaux Arts de Nimes and then at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere and the reknown Julian Academy in Paris. She exhibited regularly at the Salon d'Automne between 1907 and 1938, the Salon des Independants and the Salon des Tuileries between 1925 and 1934.
Bermond applied contrasting colors in linear juxtaposition in order to create a luminous and dynamic picture surface. The structure of her work is highly geometric, as figures and forms are reduced to a series of rectangles, triangles and circles in the tradition of Cezanne. Her use of traditional perspective and broadly delineated forms adds movement and depth to her vivid Mediterranean seascapes, lush Provencal landscapes and animated urban street life.
