Bouquet of Poppies
Oil on canvas, 20 x 21 inches
Russian- American Artist.
Born to a Jewish.family in Kishinev, Bessarabia (in Imperial Russia), Moldovan pursued his artist studies in Paris before emmigrating to the United States. He developed his bold, highly expressionistic style while working with colleagues from Eastern Europe , Russia, Italy and Spain in Paris between the two world wars. These included the tormented Russian painter, Chaim Soutine, as well as the bold French colorist, Henri Matisse.
The noted art critic Marla Berg once said of Moldovan, "Had van Gogh painted Matisse's pictures while dreaming of Chagall, the result would have been the works of Sacha Moldovan".
Moldovan applied thick layers of densely colored pigment to add texture to the pictorial surface, and his palette of highly contrasted brilliant tonalities contribute to the energetic quality of his compositions. His subject matter include dynamic urban street scenes, luminous harbor views and highly chromatic still life compositions. |
