PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH CUPBOARD IN BITTERSWEET ORANGE PAINT, WITH SPONGE-DECORATED SURFACE, ON TURNED FEET, FOUND IN READING, 1840-1870

Description:
PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH CUPBOARD IN BITTERSWEET ORANGE PAINT, WITH SPONGED DECORATION, ON TURNED FEET, FOUND IN READING, PA, 1840-1870: Made ca 1840-1870, this Berks County, Pennsylvania Dutch cupboard has bittersweet orange paint with sponged decoration. It was purchased directly out of a house in Reading by a friend of mine. The two-piece case has three drawers over two doors on the bottom section, resting on turned, bun feet, with two six-light doors and two candle drawers on the top, crowned by a nice cornice molding. The interior of the top retains its original yellow paint with fantastic surface. Although two are absent, one of the original, square, adjustable dish rails is present. The construction is excellent. The case is dovetailed top and bottom. The drawers are dovetailed. There is finely molded trim on the waist and a nicely scribed, beaded edge around each door. The cast iron hardware on the doors is period and original. The surface of the cupboard was covered in a heavy brown varnish. This was professionally removed to reveal the original color and decoration. This is an extraordinary object due to the fact that it is a decorated cupboard with strong color and well-balanced, appealing form and with very little restoration at all to the original painted surface. Condition: It takes a few sentences to cover this, but the items on the list are minor. The pads on two of the four bun feet have been restored. Some of the molding on the pie shelf was restored. There is a strip of wood replaced at the top of the center drawer and along the hinged side of the left-hand blind door. The most significant issue is that the original candle drawers were lost (a common circumstance when such cupboards were moved). These are top-notch quality replacements, dovetailed front and back and made with antique popular.
