   A Folk Art Wood Shop Sign of a Sailor, 2nd half 19th century


 

Description:
A Sailor with a Sextant Shop Sign, Polychromed Wood, 19th Century, The polychromed wood figure depicts a sailor holding a sextant in his raised hand so he can use the instrument, The arms are articulated. He wears a dark blue jacket and a black top hat. Figure: 47 1/2 inches tall; 17 inches across shoulders; 18 3/4 inches deep. Stands on wood base 12 inches x 2 3/4 inches high x 13 1/2 inched wide Total Height: 50 1/4 inches Tall. Reference: A figure such as this would most likely have been used as a sign for a nautical instrument maker. In The Flowering of American Folk Art (1776-1876), Jean Lipman & Alice Winchester, page 159, another figure of a sailor holding a sextant is shown (24 inches tall). It hung over the door of James Fales, a nautical instrument maker in Newport, RI, c 1810 and then over the shop of James Fales, Jr. in New Bedford, Mass c 1830-80 and is now in the Whaling Museum of New Bedford, Mass.
