STAND-UP BLANKET CHEST, A VERY UNUSUAL FORM, GREEN PAINT WITH DECORATION, MAINE:

Description:
This very unusual, lift-top, stand-up blanket chest in the form of an Empire chest of drawers was most certainly made by the same group of Maine craftsman who produced many of the colorfully painted and decorated, country Sheraton dressing tables of the same era (1830-50). Note the faux overhanging top drawer, applied columns, backsplash, and bold, turned feet. I have never previously seen a lift-top chest made in this style. This great folk example has light green paint with pinstriped decoration to compliment its visually interesting form.
