YELLOW PAINTED BUCKET BENCH WITH SALMON POLKA-DOTS, 1830-50, LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA:

Description: |
This is one of the few decorated bucket benches I have ever encountered. I bought it almost ten years ago in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania from a local dealer, then sold it to another dealer, who evidently sold it to a client.
When I owned the bench there original, salmon-orange polka-dots covering the sides. For some unknown reason, the collector who eventually acquired the piece attempted to remove them. God only knows what compels people to do such things, but luckily the spots didn't come off entirely and so an opportunity was left to restore them to their original appearance simply by darkening them. I did this myself, personally, a task made easier by the fact that I had once owned the bench and lived with it in my kitchen for a time.
The one other saving grace, if there is any to be had, lies in the fact that the price is now less than it was back then because of the restoration o these polka dots. And at least it can now be enjoyed again as a rare example of Lancaster County paint-decorated furniture. |
