IM-8598: (155x115mm) Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 14 lines of Latin text, on animal vellum. Ruled in red with dark brown ink, in fine gothic script, with rubrics (headings) in red.

France (Amiens?) c. 1240 – Very early (during the first period of transition from Psalters and Psalter-hours).  

Three multi-line illuminated initials in mauve/blue & white on a burnished gold ground - extending into the margins with a floral motif  (ONE WITH A PORTRAIT OF A MAN) in colors & burnished gold (all have slight rubbing).  Extending from the letter containing the portrait and into the margin is a wonderful crane !!!  One one-line initial in burnished gold on blue & mauve ground with delicate white tracery.

The two-line initial with the miniature portrait begins “Deus qui…” (O God, who in wondrous order dost ordain and constitute the services of men and Angels; mercifully grant that our life may be defended on earth by them that stand near Thee, evermore ministering to Thee in heaven…). The illuminated “P” begins the prayer: “Prasta...” (Grant, we beseech Thee, O almighty God, that Thy family may fare onward in the path of salvation, and by giving heed to the preaching of the blessed Fore-runner John, may safely attain unto Him whom John preached, even our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee...).
