IM-9235: (124 x 90mm) Original leaf from a medieval manuscript Book of Hours. 16 lines of text, ruled in red, written in Latin with dark brown ink & red rubrics in fine gothic script on animal vellum. One illuminated four-line initial in red with delicate white penwork having an internal floral motif in burnished gold, green, blue, orange and white, and resting on a blue ground with white penwork surrounded by a burnished gold border; three illuminated two-line initials in burnished gold on red and blue ground with delicate white penwork; eleven illuminated one-line initials alternating in deep blue with delicate red penwork and burnished gold with delicate blue penwork; three-quarter illuminated bar border surrounding the text in burnished gold, then surrounded by an elaborate floral border with burnished gold bezants and colors of red, blue, green, orange and blue.

The four-line illuminated “D” opens the Hours of the Virgin – Hour of Compline; “Converte...” (Convert us O God our Savior...). The two-line illuminated “S” begins Psalm128 (King James 129) complete: “Sepe...” (Often they have fought against me from my youth, let Israel now say. Often have they fought against me from my youth: but they could not prevail over me...). The two-line illuminated “D” begins Psalm 129 (KJ 130) 1-4: “De profundis...” (Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication...). |
