PAINT-DECORATED PENNSYLVANIA BLANKET CHEST, FOREST GREEN AND SALMON RED, FOUND IN UPPER BERN TOWNSHIP, SHARTLESVILLE, BERKS COUNTY, 1830-50:

| Painted Pennsylvania blank chest, made in the 1830-1850 period, with paneled sides, country Sheraton feet, and applied columns. The colors are an unusual and very attractive mix of forest green and salmon red. Made of pine, the construction is excellent. The stiles are carefully mortised and pegged into the framework. The three front and side panels are chamfered and raised on the interior, while the chamfering of the large, single-paneled back is exposed on the exterior. The ring-and-vase turning of the applied feet is especially nice. Above is a combination of block, ring and cylinder. The paint surface is excellent and original. The salmon panels show faint shadows of fan and stylized tree decoration.
The chest was found in Shartlesville, located west of the town of Hamburg, in Upper Bern Township, in Berks County, and was probably produced in the immediate area. Shartlesville is a tiny, unincorporated community located at the base of the Blue Mountains, along the Appalachian trail. |
