UPSTATE NEW YORK PRESERVE CUPBOARD WITH DYNAMIC COLOR & PAINT DECORATION, CIRCA 1830-1860:

Description:
One of the best paint decorated jelly cupboards that has ever surfaced.  This New York State example was originally found near Waterville, (Oneida County, between Syracuse and Utica) and has been in private collections for the past 30 years.  The chrome yellow decoration over a red base is stunning, highly unusual, and a bit more intense than it appears in these photos.  The opposing diagonal squiggles and polka dots on the door panels are outstanding, as are the consecutive lines of sponging that snake back-and-forth across the top.  The contrasting red sides and doorframes add a very interesting dimension to its appearance, and the knob, while atypical and an odd choice for the cupboard, is early and was left intact.  The brass knob has an applied, round, glass center.  It has been on the cupboard for the duration of its known history.  Circa 1830-1860.
