RACE HORSE GAME WHEEL, MADE BY H.C. EVANS, CHICAGO, CA 1950:
Description: |
Elaborately embellished race horse gaming wheel, made by Evans & Company in Chicago. Each of the wheel's 10 panels are brightly colored lithographs behind glass, framed by lengths of decorative nickel-plated trim. The four crown-shaped center panels are foil-decorated mirror, framed with the same trim and finished with whimsical stars. Numbers would have once ran the outer edge of the wheel and were the real source of the game it was used for, which functioned quite like a ball-in-cage lottery with payouts that alternated based on the changing number in the cylindrical tower.
The wooden post that supports the wheel, which has a cast-iron, tripod base, is polychrome-painted wood and sheet metal. It collapses for easy transport. The frame of the wheel is heavy laminate wood, 1 3/4" thick, with metal supports and nickel-plated pins. |

Condition: |
The outer ring (red in color) of the wheel has been re-surfaced. This was probably not unusual, as the edges were the most susceptible to damage as these extremely heavy wheels were rolled around and transported by leasing companies. Glass and mirror was probably broken and replaced as needed. A company renting gaming equipment like this to lodges, race courses, gambling houses, carnivals and clubs would probably have kept stock of replacements and owned multiple wheels. |
