M-11566: (Image : 19 x 20 1/2'') ''L-EMPIRE DE LA CHINE...'' Paris: S. Robert De Vaugondy, c. 1751. Beautifully engraved map with original hand-coloring.
This 18th century map, with an elaborate and colorful title cartouche, extends from southwestern China across to Taiwan and up to northeast China and Korea. It retains the ''1751'' date which was removed in later editions. Provinces are named and in contrasting colors. Korea is depicted in an unusual shape. Topographical features are shown and most major cities, villages, mountains and waterways are located. The colorful cartouche on the right shows indigenous vegetation, china and paper umbrellas, along with the French conception of Chinese people.
