Canton / Union [on an American national flag] — With regard to an American national flag, this is the blue quadrant or where the stars are located, sometimes referred to as the “Union”. The term is taken from heraldry. On a traditional coat-of-arms, the shield is divided into four sections; each of these quadrants is called a "canton". Some flags have four cantons like many heraldic shields. The American National flag has only one canton.
