French Art Nouveau 18K mythological, Diamond and Peridot Necklace, C.1900. The Necklace, depicting a mythological griffin combination including part eagle, part serpent, carrying a diamond in mouth and suspending a briolette peridot. Old mine cut Diamond approximately 0.25 ct, approximately VS2 clarity and approximately I colour. Wing spread: 2.25 inches. Pendant drop: 2.75 inches. Length: - 18 inches. Total Item Weight: - 27.00 gm. French Eagle mark and numbered 7962. Later chain attached. The griffin, a strange and legendary creature, usually represented as being part eagle and part lion and occasionally part serpent. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine. |
