1/4'') ''NOVA PERSIAE ARMENIAE NATOLIAE et ARABIAE...'' Frederick De Witt. Amsterdam: Reinier
& Josua Ottens, c. 1730. Engraved
map with original hand-coloring.
This
rare Ottens' edition of the De Witt map
depicts the region from Turkey and Egypt westward to present-day
Afghanistan. The detail in Arabia is
based on Sanson's map of 1654 (one of the largest scaled and best detailed maps
of the region until the mid 17th century).Topographical features are shown and
most major towns, cities, waterways, mountains and island are located. One of the few available Dutch maps to mention Armenia in the title of the map and one
of the most detailed of the region.
The decorative title cartouche features several exotic Asian animals, Asian figures and a merchant ship. On the left a
mapmaker works atop the scale of miles using dividers and other mapmaking
tools.
