Description: |

An outstanding pair of large 19th century cast iron urns by the Val D’Osne foundry after a design by Claude Ballin. Originally designed by Ballin to be made of silver for Louis XIV at Versailles, the originals were ultimately cast in bronze due to budgetary constraints.
With handles of well defined cherubs resting on the manes of lion’s heads, a lattice work band encircles the upper section under the rim, and the bowl is enhanced on opposite sides with roundels centered with the profiles of helmeted warriors and stamped “Val D’Osne….Paris.” on the square base of each urn. |
