Twelve of the fifteen maps in this atlas represent the first Italian edition of John Mitchell’s famous 1755 Map of the British and French Dominions in North America.
Mitchell’s map is considered “the most important map on American history” (Cumming, The Southeast in Early Maps, p. 47; see also Schwartz & Ehrenberg, The Mapping of America, p. 164 & pl 96; Tooley, The Mapping of America, p. 317; Ristow, A la Carte, pp 103-108 and 113; The Dictionary of American Bibliography, XIII, p. 51).
Text by Raynal comes from his popular history of the European colonies in the Indies and America. It was condemned by the Parliament of Paris for impiety and for its dangerous ideas on the people’s right to revolt.
Binding in fine condition -- Plates very clean and beautifully colored. A SUPERB atlas! |
