A George II giltwood and gessoe carved marble top console table on cabriole legs ending in paw feet. The frieze is carved with stylized leaf carving over a bulged serpentine apron with punchwork and foliate carving. The tops of each leg are carved with "Indian" masks and pendants on punchwork grounds. The cabriole legs end in paw feet with acanthus stockings. Examples of this type of furniture with gessoe carved frames and masks were executed at Houghton House in Norfolk. English, circa 1735. Condition: The frame is re-supported by a later Victorian inner frame and medial support. The marble appears to be of the period. The gilding has been refreshed. |
