RARE 19th C. charcoal and gouache portrayal of a Civil War pitched battle picturing Union cavalry charging down-slope into massed Confederate infantry, in support of advancing Yankee troops—the entire tableau beneath dense clouds of powder smoke from artillery fire. The drama of the scene is strengthened by the carefully rendered details of equipment, uniform and action. Probably the battle of Shiloh or Corinth. 44" x 33" in a gilt and gesso frame.
Ca. 1860.s. A Civil War buff's dream. |
