Rare portrait of a U.S. lightship tender, U.S.S. Mangrove as she appeared in 1898, done in early 20th c. by Charles Axel Alexius Modeer (1877-?) who served on various lightship tenders in the early 20th c. and eventually captained one for over 20 years. The tender in this portrait is the U.S.S. Mangrove. Her name appears on the life-ring on bridge rail. The Mangrove was the ship used to host the U.S. Navy inquiry into the sinking of the U.S.S.
