Early 19th c. pair of reverse painting on glass ship portraits done as silhouettes. Backgrounds done in watercolor in paper of the British ship "HMS Shannon" and "USS Chesapeake" who engaged in in a famous 1813 naval engagement off Boston during the War of 1812, during which the Chesapeake's Captain Lawrence was mortally wounded. As he was carried below, he issued a command to his crew which became naval legend" "Don't give up the ship; fight to the last man." |
