| Federal inlaid mahogany tall case clock, ca. 1800, the eight-day works with painted face signed Warranted For Mr. Seth Peck Wm. Cummens.
An exceptional Federal mahogany tall case clock with a delicate fretwork crest, adorned with three ball and spire brass finials, surmounting an arched form glass door, opening to a hand painted Roman numeral metal clock face with moon phase, patriotic shield painted spandrels, inscribed “Warranted for W. Seth Peck, Wm Cummens”, with seconds hand and calendar aperture, flanked by two full columns with brass capitals. The molded edge waist door features delicate line inlay, opening to a large brass pendulum bob and two weights, flanked by reeded quarter columns with brass capitals. The delicate line inlay continues onto the base.
William Cummens (1768-1834) was a well known clockmaker in Roxbury, Massachusetts, and was trained under New England’s premier clockmaker, Simon Willard, from 1787 until 1793.
Cummens began his own Roxbury clock making establishment in 1793. His designs and excellent standards of workmanship were indistinguishable from those of Simon Willard (1753-1848).
