“RACE FOR THE AMERICA’S CUP” Maker: M.J. Burns, Harper’s Weekly October 14, 1893

Description:
Rare woodcut engraving published as a supplement to “Harper’s Weekly”, October 14, 1893. Depicting the America’s Cup race between Vigilant and Valkyrie, a match that the American Yacht “Vigilant” would go on to win. “Harper’s Weekly, A Journal of Civilization” was an American magazine based in New York City. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857-1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on varied subject, humor and satire. Harper’s gained a reputation for employing some of the best artists of the time including Winslow Homer, A.B. Frost, M.J. Burns, and Frederic Remington among others. Teams of skilled wood carvers would execute engravings based on the artists’ original drawing and paintings. After printing, the wood blocks used for the engraving would be shaved down to be used again. As such, many images by these artists survive only as woodcut print from periodicals such as Harper’s.
