A Swiss Black Forest Carved Linden Wood & Cut Glass Compote,
marked Meiringer,
Circa 1900
The compote is in two sections- a glass bowl secured with a shaped linden wood button cap and a linden wood carved base. The base is of circular shape depicting a mountain goat perched beneath a large tree, the tree supporting the glass compote above.
Inscribed: Gewidmet Von Turnverein/ Meiringen (Dedicated to the Gymnasium Club/ Meringen (Meiringen is the maker of the piece).
Dimensions: Height 7 7/8 inches x 6 1/2 inches width.
Reference: Swiss Carvings: The Art of the 'Black Forest' 1820-1940, Jay Arenski, Simon Daniel & Michael Daniels, page 162, illustrate a page from a catalogue of the Ed. Binder & Co., Brienz retailer where a very similar piece is illustrated. The authors note (page 161) that the carvers often supplied different retailers with the same type of carving. |
