48-star, 13-stripe, patriotic quilt made sometime between WWI and WWII. Note how the blue canton rests on a red stripe. This is an unusual and highly desired trait among flag enthusiasts, some of whom believe that the placement was purposeful and represents the fact that our nation was at war. When this feature is present, we say that the canton is resting on the "war stripe".
The quilt is expertly made; thin, almost summer weight, but with a very fine batting, just the right amount of body, and beautiful quilting. Unwashed and unused, it was evidently presented as a gift. This is just the kind of construction and state of preservation that quilt collectors, like myself, prize. Made of cotton and entirely hand-sewn. |
