| The Sailing Ship The Leila, and Steamships Dinah, Pollie & the Lucy,
The Leila, a three-masted passenger sailing ship appears to be passing the chalk cliffs of Dover. Alongside greeting her arrival are the steamships Dinah, Lucy and the Pollie. A fifth ship can be seen in the distance by the cliffs. Each ship is named with paper flags on their masts and a paper flag with the initial of each ship on the foremast. The Leila has a Union Jack on her fore-mast, the letter L on the main-mast and then the ships name on the mizzen-mast spelt out with flags representing each letter of the name.
Reference: In August 1851 W.W. Stafford was the master of the Leila and brought passengers to New York from Rotterdam. These passengers were from Holland and Germany. |
