This very informative map depicts the United States as it existed for a brief period in the early 1860’s. Of particular interest are New Mexico and Arizona (both admitted 1912)– in a very unusual HORIZONTAL configuration which existed very briefly. (The Confederate Territory of Arizona appears in the southern third of New Mexico Territory. Between August 1861 - July 1862, Confederate officer John R. Baylor appointed himself the territorial governor and claimed all of New Mexico Territory south of the 34th Parallel for the Confederacy). The Territories of Washington (statehood 1889), includes present day Idaho (statehood 1890). Colorado (statehood 1876) has present-day boundaries. The Territories of Nevada (statehood 1864) and Utah (statehood 1896) had their borders changed when admitted as states. Indian Territory became Oklahoma in 1907, and the Territory of Dacotah includes present-day Montana, the Dakotas and part of Wyoming. Nebraska Territory (statehood 1867) also includes part of present-day Wyoming. The “Santa Fe Trail”, “Pony Express Route”, Oregon Trail, “Over-land Mail Route”, and other “Wagon Roads” are well noted. Two insets depict “Hampton Roads and Norfolk Harbor” and “Pensacola Bay”. A great view of the country in the midst of the American Civil War.
