BARBER POLE WITH ACORN FINIAL, A HALF-ROUND, APPLIED COLUMN-STYLE EXAMPLE, ca 1900-1930

Description:
Made ca 1900-1920, this barber pole would make a rather nice addition to a growing folk art collection for several reasons. First is the form, which has great turnings and is in an unusual style. Probably mounted indoors, due to the excellent condition of its paint, the pole is half-round like an applied column on the front of a chest of drawers. This means that it can mount snuggly against a wall and achieve nice impact and a very clean look without the bother of having a free-standing pole to work around, trip over, etc. Second is the acorn top, which is always an attractive feature in my opinion, and third is the combination of strong color and condition. This is an in-service paint, meaning that it is not a first surface, but barber poles rarely survived without having been repainted and second or later surfaces are perfectly acceptable in this type of utilitarian folk art.
