M-11922 - Map of the New United States in 1784

Description:

M-11922: (Image: 17 1/2 x 22 1/2'') ''CHARTE uber die XIII vereinigte Staaten von NORD-AMERICA'' Homann Heirs. Nuremberg: F. L. Gussefeld, c. 1784. Engraved map with original hand-coloring.

This map depicts the 13 United States  - just one year after the American Revolutionary War. One of the first German maps of the young nation (with the title also provided in French along the top).  It designates the newly established boundaries with Canada, Louisiana and Florida, though they were still in dispute. Remarkable for its detail not only on the seaboard, but on the western frontier as well!  The region shaded in pale yellow from the western boundaries of the states to the Mississippi contains the phrase ''Land gained by the United States of America with their Freedom of 1783''. Indian tribes are well located throughout the map.
