AN EXTREMELY EARLY MAP TO INDICATE PLACE-NAMES IN WESTERN AMERICA.
This 16th century map depicts the lands of the north Pacific & Artic with interesting early forms of Japan and California. The large & prominent ''Strait of Anian'' separates the two continents. The Kingdom of the Great Kahn is described & the large landmass to the east is identified as ''America or the New World Land'' with the California peninsula named, as is the Vermillion Sea, & other places in present-day New Mexico & California. Elegant lettering, flying fish, ships at sea, ''great Sham's Tents'' & highly elaborate strapwork cartouches add strong visual appeal. |
