M-10162: De Vaugondy Map of the World - c. 1752

Description:

M-10162: (Image : 18 1/4 x 27 1/2 '') ''MAPPE MONDE...'' Paris: Robert De Vaugondy, c. 1752.  Very fine original engraved map with beautifully engraved title cartouches and fine hand-coloring (cartouches later color). Engraved by P. F. Tardieu. (Phillips # 619 mentions this earlier edition).

This historical De Vaugondy map was issued during a fascinating and rapidly changing period politically, geographically and cartographically!  Published prior to the American Revolution and just two years before the onset of the French & Indian War. On the oceans are the tracks of the navigators, and notes as to when various islands were discovered. Australia is in an unusual shape, with just a few place names given.  The Northwestern portion of North America is left blank, noting that it is an unknown region. A fine detailed view of the world as it was thought to exist in the mid 18th century.
